The mother of the bride and mother of the groom each hold an important place in the wedding celebration. Their dresses should feel elegant, comfortable and appropriately fitted for a day filled with photographs, greetings, dining and dancing.
Alter My Dress provides mother-of-the-bride and mother-of-the-groom dress alterations in Philadelphia and Montgomery County, PA. Our design team works with formal dresses and gowns purchased from bridal salons, boutiques, department stores and online retailers, tailoring each garment to the wearer’s proportions, personal style and wedding-day needs.

Mother-of-the-bride and mother-of-the-groom dresses often combine formal fabrics, structured bodices, sleeves, jackets and detailed embellishments. Each garment is evaluated individually before alterations are recommended.
The hem can be adjusted for the wearer’s height, shoes and preferred length. Chiffon, lace, lining, overlays and other layers may need to be hemmed separately.
The dress may be taken in or let out where its construction and seam allowance permit. Adjustments can improve the fit through the bust, waist, hips and back.
Necklines may be reshaped or adjusted, and coverage may be added when the garment’s design and available materials allow.
Sleeves can be shortened, narrowed or adjusted for comfort and movement. Straps may also be shortened, lengthened or repositioned to improve support and fit.
Matching jackets, boleros and other coordinating pieces may be adjusted so they fit comfortably and complement the dress.
Zippers, hooks, buttons and other closures may be adjusted or replaced when needed for proper fit and function.
Lace, sequins, beads and appliqués may need to be carefully removed and reapplied so the dress can be altered without disrupting its original detailing.

Bring the dress, wedding-day shoes and the undergarments or shapewear you plan to wear. If the outfit includes a matching jacket, bolero or other coordinating piece, bring those items as well.
The design team evaluates the garment’s length, proportion, support and movement. We also discuss neckline coverage, sleeve comfort and any concerns about sitting, walking or dancing in the dress.
We explain the recommended adjustments and any limitations created by the garment’s fabric, seam allowance, construction or embellishments. The estimated cost and fitting schedule are reviewed before work begins.
The approved alterations are completed in stages. Structured gowns, significant resizing, layered skirts, jackets and detailed embellishment work may require an additional fitting.
The completed outfit is checked with the planned shoes, undergarments and coordinating pieces to confirm its fit, comfort, length and overall appearance before the wedding.

Schedule the first fitting approximately four to eight weeks before the wedding whenever possible. Dresses requiring significant resizing, layered hems, sleeve changes, detailed embellishment work or alterations to coordinating jackets may need additional time.
Have the wedding-day shoes and planned undergarments ready before the first fitting. Appointment availability can become limited during peak wedding and prom seasons, so booking early is recommended—especially when the wedding requires travel or the completed outfit is needed before the event date.
The cost of mother's dress alterations depends on the dress’s fabric, construction, number of layers and embellishments, as well as the type and extent of the required adjustments. A basic hem or strap alteration generally requires less work than significant resizing, maternity alterations or changes to a structured or heavily detailed dress.
Each mother's dress must be evaluated while it is being worn before Alter My Dress can provide an accurate quote. The recommended alterations and estimated cost will be reviewed during the fitting before work begins.

Mother's dress fittings are available by appointment at both Alter My Dress locations. Each mother should bring her dress, wedding shoes and the undergarments or shapewear she plans to wear.
