An evening gown should create an elegant silhouette while allowing you to sit, walk and move comfortably throughout the event. Alter My Dress provides evening gown alterations in Philadelphia and Montgomery County, PA, with couture-level tailoring for galas, black-tie events, receptions, award ceremonies and other evening occasions.
Our design team works with fitted gowns, floor-length dresses, formal separates and detailed eveningwear purchased from designers, boutiques, department stores and online retailers. Each garment is evaluated for fit, proportion, construction and movement before alterations are recommended.

Evening gowns may combine fitted silhouettes, draped fabrics, structured bodices, floor-length skirts and intricate embellishments. Alterations are planned around the gown’s design and the way it should fit and move.
The hem is adjusted for the wearer’s height, shoes and intended gown length. Lining, chiffon, satin, lace overlays and other layers may need to be hemmed separately.
An evening gown may be taken in or let out where its construction and seam allowance permit. Adjustments can refine the fit through the bust, waist, hips and back.
Straps may be shortened, lengthened or repositioned, and sleeves can be adjusted for improved fit, support and movement.
Depending on the gown, the neckline, back or coverage may be adjusted to improve comfort, security and proportion.
A slit may be raised, lowered or secured when the construction allows. Skirt layers, draping and fullness may also require individual adjustment.
Zippers, hooks, buttons and other closures may be adjusted or replaced when needed for proper fit and function.
Lace, sequins, beads and appliqués may need to be carefully removed and reapplied so the gown can be altered without disrupting its original design.

Bring the evening gown, event shoes and the undergarments or shapewear you plan to wear. The design team evaluates the gown’s length, fit, support and movement while it is being worn.
We identify the adjustments needed through the hem, bodice, waist, hips, straps, sleeves, neckline, back or slit. Any limitations created by the fabric, construction or embellishments are explained during the fitting.
The recommended alterations, estimated cost and fitting schedule are reviewed before work begins. The complexity of the gown and the event date are considered when planning the project.
The approved work is completed in stages. Significant resizing, structured bodices, layered skirts, draped fabrics and detailed handwork may require an additional fitting.
The finished gown is checked with the planned shoes and undergarments to confirm its length, fit, comfort and movement before the event.

Schedule the first fitting approximately four to eight weeks before the event whenever possible. Gowns requiring significant resizing, structured bodice work, several skirt layers, draping adjustments or detailed embellishment work may need additional time.
Have the event shoes and planned undergarments ready before the first fitting. Appointment availability can become limited during wedding, prom and holiday seasons, so booking as soon as the gown is available is recommended. If the event is approaching, use the appointment form to check whether rush service can be accommodated.
TThe cost of evening gown alterations depends on the garment’s fabric, construction, number of layers and embellishments, as well as the type and extent of the required adjustments. A basic hem or strap alteration generally involves less work than resizing a structured bodice, changing draping or altering a heavily embellished gown.
Alter My Dress must evaluate the evening gown while it is being worn before providing an accurate quote. The recommended alterations and estimated cost will be reviewed during the fitting before work begins.

Evening gown fittings are available by appointment at both Alter My Dress locations. Bring the gown, event shoes and the undergarments or shapewear that will be worn with it so the length and fit can be evaluated accurately.

Alterations may include hemming, taking in or letting out the bodice, waist or hips, adjusting straps and sleeves, modifying the neckline or back, changing a slit, adjusting closures and working with lace, sequins or beading.
“Formal dress” is a broad category that includes many special-occasion styles, including ball gowns. An evening gown is typically a longer, elegant garment worn for galas, black-tie events, receptions and evening celebrations. Alter My Dress provides a dedicated page for each search need, although some alteration techniques overlap.
